The completion of 37 new affordable homes on Levenshulme Road in Longsight has transformed a previously underused brownfield site into a thriving residential community, providing much-needed affordable housing in an area of high demand.
Delivered through a partnership between Jigsaw Homes, Watson and Manchester City Council, the development supports wider regeneration ambitions while helping local people access high-quality, sustainable homes.
Located close to Manchester city centre, the scheme has six two-bedroom houses, 20 one-bedroom apartments and 11 two-bedroom apartments, all for social rent.
Sustainability was a key consideration throughout the project. Each home has been designed to reduce environmental impact and help residents manage household costs through the use of low-carbon technologies, including solar photovoltaic panels, air-source heat pumps, electric vehicle charging points and gas-free heating systems. These features not only contribute to lower carbon emissions but also support residents to benefit from reduced energy bills over the long term.
As part of Manchester City Council’s ambition to deliver 10,000 new affordable homes by 2032, the scheme contributes to wider efforts to increase the supply of affordable housing across the city.
Residents also benefit from a range of practical features that enhance quality of life and encourage a sense of community.
The development includes 29 off-road parking spaces, landscaped green areas and a carefully planned layout that promotes accessibility, safety and neighbourhood connectivity.
Cllr Gavin White, Manchester City Council’s executive member for housing and development, said: “We have made a clear commitment to increase the number of genuinely affordable homes to meet demand in the city and support our residents into quality homes that meet their needs – and it’s great to see this scheme offering 100% social rent housing, the most affordable housing available. It’s developments like this in Longsight that are helping Manchester people move into the sustainable and affordable home they deserve.”
The Levenshulme Road development highlights how investment in affordable housing can deliver lasting social, environmental and economic benefits. By bringing a vacant site back into use and providing 37 high-quality homes for social rent, the project has created a sustainable new community while supporting Manchester’s wider housing and regeneration objectives.
